First of all, I completely forgot to mention that the Champions League final for fútbol (soccer) was Saturday night. The Spanish take soccer extremely seriously, and the city was going wild. People were screaming and cheering out every window, and nobody was in the streets while the game was on. I was originally planning on going out to watch the game, but my madre was so entertaining that I decided to stay in and watch the game with her. This game was particularly intense for Spain because the two biggest Spanish rivals, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid played for the league title. My madre is a huge Real Madrid fan. Real Madrid was down 1-0 until the final minutes of the game, when they scored to tie it up and send the game into overtime, during which Real Madrid scored three more goals to make the final score 4-1. My madre is SO happy Real Madrid is the champion of Europe. She loves Cristiano Ronaldo, and never stopped commenting on how "guapo" (handsome) he is. She was out of her seat and jumping up and down yelling at the TV (Yes, her ankle is still sprained).
I spent Sunday afternoon at the beach. There are a couple of different beaches on the coast of Valencia, and I went to La Platja de la Malvarrosa. Typically, the word beach in Spanish is "playa," but because they speak Valencian (a dialect of Spanish) here, some words are slightly different. The weather was absolutely perfect. It was warm enough that I wasn't cold, and breezy enough that I wasn't too hot. The sand is so much softer than beaches I've been to in the United States, and the Mediterranean Sea is so bright and blue. I didn't really leave my towel to explore because I was so tired from hiking the previous day, but I plan to go back many more times!
Today was a relaxed day… I went to class, and also signed up for a couple of trips through the university. I will be traveling to Peñiscula this Saturday, and I'll be going to Granada in a couple of weeks. Other than that, I hope to travel to Madrid and Toledo one weekend, Barcelona another weekend, Portugal for a weekend, and Ibiza for a full day/night. I'll keep you posted on my travel plans, because a lot of them are still up in the air!
Other than that, I went to the Mercadona by my apartment today. Mercadona is the major grocery store chain here. One thing I found particularly interesting is that their shopping baskets are on wheels and you pull them like a little wagon!
¡Hasta luego!
