Despite all of my fun adventures, yes, studying abroad actually consists of studying, too! My classes have been going well. I received a 97% on my first Spanish literature essay! It took me longer to write two pages about Spanish literature than it takes me to write 20 about English literature, so I was pretty happy when I saw my grade this morning. I have already noticed a considerable improvement in my speaking skills as well. It is becoming easier to understand and produce the language. My madre has been complimenting me on my grammar a lot lately. She told me she's really impressed with my verb usage and conjugation… Gracias, Profe Sokoloff! I have found myself thinking and talking to myself in Spanish, too.
These past couple of days have been filled with discussions about the historic event that occurred yesterday morning. King Juan Carlos of Spain made the decision to abdicate his throne and pass the crown to his son, Crown Prince Felipe. Juan Carlos has been the King of Spain for the past 39 years, but his health is deteriorating. Spain is currently in an economic slump, and needs a strong leader. After seeing so many newscasts and reading articles about the situation, it is evident that Juan Carlos has a lot of faith in his son. He believes that he is more than ready for the role and will, "open a new era of hope combining his acquired experience and drive of a new generation." Crown Prince Felipe is said to have the young energy, maturity, determination, and intensity that Spain needs. The Royal Family resides in the Royal Palace of Madrid. I will be traveling to Madrid this weekend, so maybe I will get to see something cool happen?!
¡Hasta luego!
